ANGKOR, A NEW MEGALOPOLIS

Two archaeologists Pierre Bâty and Jean-Baptiste Chevance have made a new and significant breakthrough in our knowledge of Angkor.  They has uncovered the remains of the first capital of the Khmer Empire. For the first time, an archaeological program will be carried out in partnership with the local population.

Since 2012, two wide-ranging excavation programs led by French archaeologists Pierre Bâty and Jean-Baptiste Chevance have made a new and significant breakthrough in our knowledge of Angkor. Their research work covers a wide period of history. In the plain of Siem Reap where the capacity of the airport is being improved, the team has uncovered the dwelling places of the temple builders. In Phnom Kulen, about 40 kilometers North from Angkor, right in the middle of the jungle and in the remote mountains where mines are still to be found, they have discovered the remains of the first capital of the Khmer Empire created in 802. For the first time, an archaeological program of excavation and of sustainable development will be carried out in partnership with the local population. The film takes us beyond Angkor in the foosteps of its builders and unveils the cities built prior to Angkor, but it also reveals the way of life of the local people today.
