This is where animals no longer appear wild and seem members of a family where man and animals intermingle. One even wonders why they don’t roam free, until the day they chase someone down to try and eat them. The heroes of this series are named Katka, Cookie, Prosper and Nossy Bé – elephants, hippopotamuses, sea-lions, lemurs – and we share in their life at the Zoo. A life of changing pens, of meeting new mates, of births, illnesses and deaths. We discover the zoo through their eyes, listening to their calls of pleasure or fear. The caretakers and vets become our interpreters.
