New archaeological digs directed by Annick Heitzmann and Bruno Bentz have started in May 2015 on the Marly estate near Versailles. The archaeologists hope to find traces of the settings, lifestyle and history of this architectural marvel inside basement rooms and in the underground. This residence was a haven for Louis XIV who wanted to spend time with his family members and friends, especially during the last years of his life, far from the pomp of Versailles. 300 years after his death, these excavations are the unique opportunity to find out about the history of this hidden royal residence with a unique architecture and to retrace the Sun King’s private life.
