SYNOPSIS

Hollywood has forged our vision of a legendary Wild West through the Westerns. But what do we know about the reality of these days ?

Hollywood has forged our vision of a ledendary Wild West through the Westerns. This vision of deserts conquered by adventurous and fierce less outlaws hit by the gold fever has filled our imagination. Mark Twain's humorous and colourful writing of larger than life characters has contributed to this picturesque perception. But what do we know about the reality of these days in this booming region? Who were the settlers and what were their work conditions and their social life like? How did Virginia city-Nevada become the most productive mining camp in the world with over 15 000 settlers in 1863? Historians and archaeologists join the exploration to turn clichés upside down and unravel a cosmopolite environment where miners, entrepreneurs, saloon owner's prostitutes and gamblers all struggled to make a better life for themselves.
